Charles Eames was born in Missouri in 1907 and developed an interest in architecture and engineering from a young age. He worked in an architecture office and in 1929 married his first wife. They divorced in 1941, and Charles wanted to branch out to other areas further away from architecture. He received a scholarship to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and worked as head of the design department.

Ray Eames entered the world in 1912 in California. Her passion for art led her to study with Hans Hoffmann in New York and then move to the Cranbrook Art Academy. One of the major projects was working with the Saarinen family to design the Organic Furniture Contest at the Museum of Modern Art. They worked on plywood prints into a series of complicated curves and won the first two prizes in the competition.

It was at Cranbrook that Ray and Charles met and married in 1941. They settled in California and continued to produce furniture using innovative designs of plywood. During the Second World War, the Navy commissioned the pair to make stretchers, splints and launching shells. In 1946, a company called Evans Products began producing the molded plywood furniture of the Eames’ and the design of its chair was called the ‘chair of the century’ by architect Esther McCoy. Then production was taken over by Herman Miller Inc. in the United States and Vitra in Europe.

The couple are also famous for the amazing homes they built together in Pacific Palisades, California. In 1949, they designed and built their own property as part of a case study sponsored by the Arts & Architecture magazine. The use of materials and their intelligent designs attracted the attention of architects and designers from all over the world. It is still considered a very important post-war residence and one of the most important places in the world of architectural interest.
